Peregrinaggio di tre giovani figliuoli del re di Serendippo (a Persian fairy tale )

View previous topic View next topic Go down  Message [Page 1 of 1]

published by Michele Tramezzino in Venice in 1557
translated by one of Amir Khusrau's Hasht Bihisht[1] of 1302.

"In ancient times there existed in the country of Serendippo, in the Far East, a great and powerful king by the name of Giaffer. He had three sons who were very dear to him. And being a good father and very concerned about their education, he decided that he had to leave them endowed not only with great power, but also with all kinds of virtues of which princes are particularly in need."

in ancient times was a king Giaffer
a wise man
a powerful man it is said
he had three sons the story goes
upon these sons his greatest endowment
virtue and wisdom he wanted to bestow

to find a camel, lost and never seen
a quest one might understand above virtue I suspect
so if I (also never laid eyes on this here animal)
tell as they that the camel was one eye blind, lame
carting a pregnant woman, butter on one side and honey on other
you might suspect wizardry or inside information
lest we not forget, the missing tooth as well
my moral in this,
to spare your life, see what is unseen by others

and so the story continues
but here I leave the path
for what I came to tell is this
Serendipity is when you find
(by mistake off course)
that you never quested to find
like these three prince's
I suggest travel from Serendip,
always making discoveries,
by accidents and sagacity
and all is what it isn’t
as nothing is what it should be
should the path make no sense
just remember...
Serendipity!
